While « Don’t come. It’s over. Take it and deal with it, bitch» might sound like a lyric from a song by your favorite neighborhood rap artist, it’s actually from a song by French up-and-coming folk singer/songwriter Soko.
« Don’t come. It’s over. Take it and deal with it, bitch» pourraient bien être les paroles d’une chanson interprétée par votre rappeur préféré du quartier, mais elles ont été composées par une jeune chanteuse parolière française de folk Soko.
Sokois among the latest crop of French singers who insist on singing in English for better or worse. At
least, she has the distinction of being recently cited as a rising star by Les Inrockuptibles (a French entertainment magazine similar to Rolling Stone).
Sokofait partie des jeunes chanteurs français qui insistent à chanter en anglais pour le meilleur ou pour le pire. Au moins Soko aurait la distinction d’avoir été nommée une nouvelle tête par Les Inrockuptibles.
At Sunday night’s show (April 29), Soko sang in contemporary song/speak with a woman-child’s voice to sound off on heartbreak and the violence she’d like to inflict on an ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend. Accompanied by an acoustic guitarist, Soko played a melodica and a xylophone, while singing songs full of vulnerablity. She later flitted into songs of love and yearning (just to let you know she’s not still hung up on that loser ex from the previous song). Overall, her lyrics are accessible, without being overly simplistic and may charm both an English-speaking and French-speaking audience with their directness.
À son concert dimanche soir (le 29 avril), Soko a interprété, ses chansons à moitié parlées d’une voix de femme-fille pour dénoncer ses chagrins d’amours et la violence dont elle rêve de faire à son ex-copain et sa nouvelle copine. Accompagnée par un guitariste acoustique, elle jouait du mélodica et du xylophone avant de se lancer dans des chansons plus fragiles sur l’amour et le désir, pour vous montrer qu’elle n’est pas toujours collée à son connard d’ex de la chanson précédente. En gros, les chansons sont accessibles, sans être trop réductrices et peuvent séduire un public anglophone et francophone par leur franchise.
