Rony @ L’Opus Café

With a mop of kinky curly hair, soul funk singer, Rony would be better compared to a fun-loving Jamiroquai than a slick and smooth Keith Sweat or R. Kelly ; At his Satruday night show, he and his band the 7 Sonics together for their second Soulissme branded soirée could have easily been mistaken for skateboarders or urban surfers with their down to earth style perfect for cooling down after a hot summer’s day. Singing mostly in French Rony, is one of the few on the Soul/ funk circuit to insist French can be just as soulful as English when performing.

Avec sa tignasse crépue kinky, le chanteur de néo soul/funk, Rony, ressemblerait d’avantage à un Jamiroquai bien animé qu’au hyper soigné Keith Sweat ou à R. Kelly. À son concert samedi soir, Rony et son groupe le 7 Sonics, rassemblés pour leur 2e soirée marquée Soulissime, auraient pu passé pour une équipe de skateboardeurs ou de surfeurs urbains avec leur style décontracté, tout juste ce qui nous faillait pour nous rafraîchir par une belle une soirée estivale.

Slam poet, Saury Saul freestyled lifteing parts of Gil Scot Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” and got the crowd going on themes of the world’s current woes on an upbeat tip. This nicely segued into Rony’s introduction and the band taking their places on stage to formally start the show. With guests like Oncle Ben and Lisa Spada, Rony easily found his groove. Staying true to his principles, English was only sung on cover tunes by the likes of Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers, which did them each justice.

Fidel a ses principes, il ne chantait en anglais que les reprises de Marvin Gaye et de Bill Withers (tout en leur rendant justice).

While this ongoing debate on singing in French and English and still maintaining French Song cred is never-ending, Rony ‘s contribution makes a good case that yes French soul can be just as fun as Jamie Lidell without being smarmy like contemporary top 40 US soul and R& B. His original songs, were upbeat, flavorfull ditties that evoked Paris city-living. Many of the songs appeared on his first album released in 2006. The self-produced opus is one of the rare soul albums released to be self produceced and sung in French. While other French singers of the genre admit to not being able to find their niche singinging in their French mother tongue, Rony seems to do so with ease.

Alors que le débat actuel de la chanson française pose la question de la possibilité de chanter en anglais tout en gardant une crédibilité française, Rony a réussi à prouver qu’il serait capable d’être habile comme James Lidell, sans toutefois être trop sucré comme certaines vedettes de la scène contemporaine de R&B américaine. Ses chansons originales étaient chaloupées de la saveur de la vie parisienne. La plupart de ses chansons avaient déjà paru sur son 1er album en 2006. L’oeuvre auto produite, une des rares de son genre (néo-soul alternatif), se chante en français. Alors que d’autres artistes de la chanson française du même genre avouent n’avoir pas encore trouvé leur niche dans le spectacle en langue française Rony, lui, y demeure très à l’aise.

Rony will be performing once again with his partners in crime, Oncle Ben and Freddy at Cabaret Sauvage on Friday, May 30th. He is working on a second album to be released in 2009.

What a pleasure it was to see madness performed so sanely by NYC performance artist M (Mem Nahadr) and her bevy of Paris soulsinging sisters: Sandra Nkaké, Lisa Spada and Rachel Claudio.* Despite the holiday weekend imposed by French labor day (May 1) a very sizable crowd turned out through word of mouth online on a relatively unknown singer in France. In the US, she has a cult following having accompanied Julie Andrews, Liza Minelli and Chaka Kahn to name a few. After this performance Mem is sure not to pass unnoticed in Paris for long.

Quel plaisir de voir la folie interprétée si sainement par une artiste spécialisée dans la performance, M (Mem Nahadr) et une troupe de ses consœurs chanteuses de la soul de Paris: Sandra Nkaké, Lisa Spada et Rachel Claudio.* Malgré le pont imposé par la fête du travail, un public assez nombreux a assisté au concert suite à bouche à l’oreille sur l’internet d’ une chanteuse méconnue en France. Aux États-Unis, elle est très suivie par un public averti à son œuvre ayant déjà accompagné Julie Andrews, Liza Minelli et Chaka Kahn pour en citer quelques uns. Après ce concert, Mem ne risquera plus de passer inaperçue longtemps à Paris.

Sandra MC’d the show which started with improvised scatting supported by a full band. Early on Mem and Sandra’s improvisational skills were in perfect harmony, holding the audience’s attention despite a few sound board glitches. Each singer sang solo on classic soul/jazz tropes of Love and desire with little effort. Mem sang two songs from here Contemporary opera Madwoman putting basic lyrics on acceptance and frustation of lost love, jobs and being in Paris surrounded by a stage full of talent. The two songs were enough to leave the audience hungry for more, but alas it was not to be after a 2.5 hour show.

Sandra a joué le rôle d’animatrice de la soirée où une improvisation de scat nous a été introduite par un groupe de musiciens complet. Dés le début l’harmonie des improvisations entre Mem et Sandra était sans faute qui a du fait oublier le public quelques pépins techniques. Chaque jeune femme a eu l’occasion de chanter en solo sur les thèmes bien familiers de la soul : l’amour et le désir et tout cela sans effort. Mem a interprété deux chansons de son opera contemporain Madwoman ou ses textes relèves des thèmes d’accueil et chagrins d’amour, d’ ennuis au travail et le fait tout simplement d’être à Paris entourée par des artistes talentueux .. Ces deux morceaux ont laissé le public avide d’en entendre plus, mais hélas après 2h 30 de concert, il a du rester sur sa faim jusqu’à la prochaine fois….

Mem has received a spattering of praise from respectable press who have jumped on her bandwagon. Her soul-bearing at six octaves illustrates she could be ready for venues to fully stage her Madwoman opera soon enough. Her avowed insanity was just the opposite, a fully sane moment of communication from the heart and soul of a striking blond dreaded talent ready to go global.

Mem will be performing May 16 in France followed by several show in the Netherlands and the east coast of the United States.

Mem a reçu des accolades de la presse assez respectables qui semblent aussi émue que son public par son talent. Sa voix à six octaves qui touche l’âme illustre qu’il lui faudra bientôt des salles plus grandes pour monter son opéra Madwoman. Malgré son autodéclaration de la folie,’elle nous à présenté tout juste l’inverse : une interprétation raisonnable musicalement pleine de partage entre son cœur et son ame avec une tête de dreadlocks blonds, un talent qui s’apprête de s’envoler à l’internationale.

Mem jouera un concert le 16 mai en France suivi par plusieurs shows aux Pays-Bas et la côte est des États-Unis.

It’s funny Sandra, a fellow blogger, and I have been playing email tag for a couple of months now. Having seen her numerous guest appearances with Allonymous , and Frank Biyong, I was intrigued enough by her artistry to get to know more about her. Like my own mother, a clean-shaven Sandra chided me on my big hair, when we actually met for the first time at Lisa Spada’s Soulissime concert on June 9th at Canal Opus. What follows is a rhetorical piece that I feel best summarizes my thoughts on Sandra, and what I hope will be her long and fruitful career as an international entertainer.

C’est marrant, cela fait quelques mois que Sandra (aussi une bloggeuse) et moi s’échangeons des emails. Ayant vu ses nombreuses apparitions sur scène avec Allonymous et Frank Biyong, j’étais assez intriguée par son art que je voulais la mieux connaitre. Comme ma mère, Sandra, chauve, m’a grondée pour mes gros cheveux, lorsque nous nous avons pris rendez-vous pour la première fois au concert de Soulissime avec Lisa Spada le 9 juin à Canal Opus. Le texte qui suit est un exercise de style qui résume mes réflexions sur Sandra et ce que j’espère sera une longue carrière pleine de succès en tant que chanteuse/comédienne intérnationale.

Dear Sir or Madam:
Madame, Monsieur,

I am writing out of concern and respect for the fiercely sophisticated and talented unsigned singer/songwriter/actress, Ms. Sandra Nkaké (pronounced ENKAHKAY). A few months ago, I came across small animated.gifs promoting the Radio Nova hit single “Sex Friend” produced by respected Blue Note Records musician Booster, with Sandra as lead vocalist. While the song speaks volumes to the commonplace commitment shy tactics employed by many westernized young urban adults. The online promotion of the song compels me to question whether or not Paris’ new diva in the making is getting her fair shake.

Je me permets de vous écrire pour exprimer mon respect sur l’affaire de la talentuese et sophistiquée chanteuse/parolière/comédienne, Mme. Sandra Nkaké. Il y a quelques mois, j’ai remarqué des petits .gifs animés pour promouvoir le tube de Radio Nova, « Sex Friend » produit par le musicien respecté de Blue Note Records, Booster, avec Sandra comme la chanteuse principale. Alors que la chanson est un temoignage du comportament courant des jeunes occidentaux frilleux aux engagements amoureux, la promotion en ligne de cette chanson me force à poser la question : la nouvelle diva en herbe serait-elle justement representée pour son œuvre?

It’s no secret Sandra, French-Cameroonian, is distinguishing herself from other soul singers around the capital with her fearlessly sexy, and at times politically outspoken performances. She easily entices her audience with her wide-ranging vocal abilities, with the concert at New Morning last week being no exception. Sandra’s energy onstage was infectious, never limiting herself to singing exclusively in one language even in the same song. Her acting background was so transparent, with each movement perfectly articulated with the rhythmic and bass-heavy music of her backing band. Sandra continually challenges herself by collaborating with edgy, and even experimental musicians such as Ji Mob (the night’s first act), helping take her rich soul-funk sound to the next level.

Ce n’est pas un secret que Sandra, franco-camerounaise, se distingue des autres chanteurs de soul de la Capitale avec ses intérpretations à la fois couragueseument sexy et contestataires. Elle séduit facilement son public avec la richesse de sa voix, et son concert à New Morning n’était pas l’exception. Son dynamisme sur scène est contagieux, ne se limitant pas à chanter en une seule langue, dans la même chanson. Sa formation théâtrale est transparente, chaque geste étant parfaitement articulé au son de la musique bourée de bass et rythme de ses musiciens. Sandra se défit toujours en s’associant avec des collaborateurs tranchants et experimentaux, comme Ji Mob (le premier groupe sur scène ce soir-là), qui l’aident à élever sa musique soul-funk à un autre registre.

Now with all of these elements working overwhelmingly in her favor, my question is: Why was the “Sex Friend” single promoted with a white woman’s face, despite the fact that Sandra is to put it mildly, statuesque? Having developed new media marketing campaigns for major-label artists, I think using Sandra’s image could have inspired more sophisticated and original marketing come-ons, than those of the clichéd airbrushed whiteface actually used.

Or, avec tous ces éléments qui marchent largement en sa faveur, je pose la question suivante : « Pourquoi le morceau « Sex Friend » a-t-il été promu avec le visage d’une femme blanche, alors que Sandra est loin d’être légèrment moche ? » Ayant developpé des campagnes de marketing en ligne pour des artistes signés aux grandes maisons de disques, je pense que l’image de Sandra aurait pu inspirer des avances de marketing plus sophistiquées et originales, que celles du cliché de ce visage blanc retouché.

Although Sandra is in a committed relationship and a mother of two, the song could have been used to spark any number of discussions with folks worldwide on any number of issues related to health and sexuality. Without perpetuating the myth of the oversexed black temptress, the song could have easily been used as a safe-sex anthem to promote responsibility and safe sex in Africa, for example, where sexual empowerment among women of color remains an anamoly. Just an idea…

Même si Sandra est en couple avec deux enfants, la chanson aurait pu susciter un débat mondial sur pleins de sujets liés à la santé publique et la sexualité. Sans pérpetuer le mythe de la tentatrice nymphomane noire, la chanson pourrait être utitlisée comme le générique d’une campagne pour sensibliser un public africain, par exemple sur les rapports sexuels protegés, où l’autonomisation feminine encore très tabou. Juste une idée…

When I asked Sandra about the image, she mentioned it had happened so quickly, that it was already beyond her. For me, however, it conjured up notorious incidents in popular American musical history of Martha Wash’s face being censored for her being overweight; or worse still, Elvis Presley’s chart topping success with “Hound Dog”, originally penned by the blues-woman Big Mama Thornton, who died in obscurity.

Lorsque j’ai questionné Sandra sur cette image, elle m’a confiée que cela s’etait tellement vite passé, ça l’avait dépassé. Pour moi, cependant, cette image m’a evoqué la triste notorieté dans l’histoire musicale américaine de l’image de Martha Wash censurée pour son obèsité. Ou encore pire, le succès d’Elvis Presley avec «Hound Dog », composé à l’origine par la blues-woman, Big Mama Thornton, qui a disparu en obscurité.

With my eyebrow half-cocked, I hope that Sandra’s future label- as she is still a free agent-doesn’t shy away from marketing her in all of her glory. I implore them to not just capitalize on adolescent sex appeal that made Britney Spears a pop idol, or pigeon hole her into the respectable irrelevance of Des’ree. Sandra is a multi-faceted performer who deserves to be marketed internationally as a sexually empowered woman with elegance, intelligence and vocal chops to match, who just happens to be black.

Avec un œil de loucheur, j’espère que la future maison de disque de Sandra, comme elle est pour le moment, non signée, n’aurait pas peur de la commercialiser dans toute sa gloire. Je les implorerai de ne pas juste exploiter l’attrait adolescent qui a vu la montée fulgurante de Britney Spears, ou pire encore la caser vers l’absence respectable de Des’ree. Sandra est une interprète qui merite d’être promue à l’échelle internationale non seulement en tant que femme autonomisée, élégante, et intelligente, mais aussi en tant que chanteuse hors norme qui est juste comme par hasard noire.

Third Shot – Concert apéro-jazz, Paris 12è

Last Wednesday, I checked out Third Shot, at a special jazz cocktail hour event sponsored by a community center in the 12th. Friday’s Libération cited Lisa Spada, lead singer of the electro-soul group, as a young artist to watch among a new crop of French soul singers who hold their own in a genre dominated until now by Anglo-americans.

Mercredi dernier, j’ai vu Third Shot, lors d’un concert apéro-jazz sponsorisé par le Centre d’Animation du 12è. Vendredi dernier Libération a cité Lisa Spada, la chanteuse du group éléctro-soul, comme un des jeunes talents à suivre parmi une nouvelle vague de chanteurs français de soul qui se défendent au genre dominé jusqu’à présent par les Anglo-américains.

Despite the venue’s imperfect conditions, the group’s onstage sincerity and talent more than compensated for the less than stellar acoustics. It is a shame the audience wasn’t really representative of their growing Myspace fan base, which, incidently, seems to spike after each performance. Third Shot has already performed at venues more suited to their style, notably the Sunday Jazz Brunch at the Reservoir programmed by DJ Julien Lebrun .

Malgré les conditions imparfaites de la salle, Third Shot avec leur sincérité et leur talent, ont bien compensé une acoustique qui laissait à désirer. Il est dommage que le public de ce soir-là n’avait pas été plus représentatif de tous leurs amis sur Myspace, dont le nombre semble augmenter après chaque concert. Third Shot a déjà donné des concerts dans des salles valorisant d’avantage leur style, tels que le Jazz Brunch au Réservoir programmé par DJ Julien Lebrun

Singing songs entirely in English, Lisa sang an hour-long set of jazzy-soul with an electro edge. Her voice is ethereal, and balanced, without being overpowered by the very capable musicians that accompany her (a trumpet player,drummer, keyboardist, bassist and 2 backing vocialists). I was also pleased Lisa did not use the typical crutch of the trite and open-ended scat, used by some more well-known French singers around the capital. Overall, the salt and pepper band was very unassuming in a performance that avoided artifice and reflected each band member’s good qualities.

Lisa chantait toutes les chansons entièrement en anglais dans un set d’une heure de jazzy-soul saupoudré des sons éléctro. Éthérée et équilibrée, sa voix n’a jamais été suffoquée par les bons musiciens qui l’accompagnaient (un trompettiste, un batteur, un bassiste, un claviste et 2 choristes). J’étais aussi agréablement surprise de voir que Lisa ne se penchait pas trop sur les clichés des scats interminables souvent employés par certaines chanteuses françaises plus connues de la capitale. Dans l’ensemble, le groupe poivre et sel étaient sans prétention pour un concert qui évitait l’artifice et refletait les bonnes qualités de chaque musicien.

I caught up with Lisa and bassist, Gaël, after the show. After apologizing for the poor sound quality of the show (not their fault), they mentioned they were busy working on their debut album due out in September 2007. Their next performance will be on June 9 at Canal Opus as part of Soulissme with other singers also cited by Liberation (and this blog) : Sandra Nkaké, and Crystal Night. I’ll be there, how about you?

J’ai croisé Lisa et le bassiste Gaël après le concert. M’ayant priée d’excuser la qualité inférieure du son de la salle de concert (ce qui n’était pas de leur faute) ils m’ont révelé qu’ils travaillaient sur leur premier album prévu pour septembre 2007. Leur prochain concert à Paris sera le 9 juin à Canal Opus dans le cadre du Soulissme avec d’autres chanteurs cités par Libération (et ce blogue) : Sandra Nkaké et Crystal Night. J’y serai et vous?
