5: Majiker

Having heard about Majiker and his success working with Camille, Melissa Laveaux and Maya Barsony, I was curious to find out what made this gifted musician/producer tick. On the spur of the moment, I sent him five questions asking if he might have time to answer them from me, a total stranger. Much to my surprise, he responded a day later with some thoughtful responses about his latest projects.

Ayant entendu parler du Majiker et son succès avec Camille, Melissa Laveaux et Maya Barsony, J’étais curieuse de savoir ce qui motivait ce musicien-producteur doué. Sur un coup de tête, je lui ai envoyé cinq questions à répondre à une inconnue totale, moi. Quelle bonne surprise, il m’a répondu un jour plus tard avec des réponses réfléchies sur ses projets actuels.

1. Your sounds seem very percussive and onomatopaeic. What kinds of sounds inspire you to make music from them?
Tes sons sont très percutants et onomatopéiques. Quels genres de sons t’ inspirent pour faire de la musique ?

I have performed as a percussionist in many varied contexts, and I’m increasingly fascinated by rhythm, and the relationship between ‘groove’ and the spoken word. This comes from a curiosity for foreign languages and exploring the relationship between a language and it’s music, especially folk and popular music. For example, I’m sure that the melodious and catchy pop music which Sweden is famous for has a link with their melodic and bouncy language intonation.

J’ai joué en tant que percussioniste dans des contextes variés. Je suis de plus en plus fasciné par le rhythme et la relation entre le « groove » et la parole. Cela vient d’une curiosité pour des langues étrangères et de l’exploration entre une langue et sa musique surtout la folk et la musique populaire. Par exemple, Je suis sur que la chanson suèdoise à la fois mélodieuse et entraînante pour laquelle la Suède est reconnue est liée à l’intonation mélodique et rebondissante de la langue.

2. How long have you been working in music and what was your big break?
Depuis combien de temps travailles-tu dans la musique et quand as-tu eu de la veine ?

I have always made music and started recording and producing seriously from the age of about 15. I don’t believe in ‘big breaks’. Everything I have experienced in life and in my work has informed and shaped my artistic path. It was years of hard work refining my craft that led to the enormous commercial success of Camille’s album ‘Le Fil’ which I produced with her. It was wonderful how that project resonated with the audience in France and abroad.

J’ai toujours fait de la musique et ai commencé à l’enregistrer et la produire serieusement depuis l’âge de 15 ans. Je ne crois pas au concept du « déclic ». Tout ce que j’ai vécu dans ma vie et mon travail a informé et formé mon chemin artistique. Ce sont des années de travail et de raffinment de mon métier qui ont mené au grand succès commercial de l’album de Camille, Le Fil que j’ai produit avec elle. C’était génial de voir le projet retentir avec le public français et étranger.

3. You seem to work exclusively with female singers, what is your attraction to the female voice?
Tu sembles à travailler exclusivement avec des chanteuses, qu’est-ce qui t’attire à la voix féminine ?

I’m not sure, and I don’t want to analyse it too much! I’ve just always preferred the female voice, even from a very young age. However, I have worked with male vocalists, notably Sacha (Bernardson) whose debut album ‘Lave Tes Oiseaux’ which I produced was released last week. Although I must admit that it was partly the ambiguous nature of his vocals, which sometimes sound quasi-female, that attracted me to his work. On a deeper level, I guess there must be something about female vocal expression that is fascinating for me.

Je ne suis pas sur, et ne voudrais pas trop l’analyser ! J’ai juste toujours préferré la voix féminine, depuis même un tres jeune âge. Cependent, j’ai travaillé avec des chanteurs, notamment Sacha (Berdardson) , dont j’ai produit son premier album « Lave tes Oiseaux » ( « Wash Your Birds ») qui est sorti la semaine dernière. Bien que, j’avoue que ça soit due à l’ambiguïté de sa voix, ce qui donne un son quasi-féminin et attirant. Plus profondément, je pense qu’il doit y avoir un certain je ne sais quoi dans l’expression vocale féminine qui me fascine.

4. What can you tell us about your personal project: Body Piano Machine?
Pourrais-tu nous éxpliquer ton projet personnel : Body, Piano, Machine ?

It started as a virtually instrumental album, born from my desire to combine elements from those three instruments: the human body, the acoustic piano and my Yamaha PSS 270, a child’s keyboard that my
brother owned when we were kids. As the tracks developed I started to write melodies, some of which I sang myself, some of which I developed and recorded with guest female singers such as Camille, Maya Barsony and China Moses. I am currently negotiating the contract to release the album and it should be available around March 2009.

Recently I have been performing a very special show based on these songs to go hand in hand with the album. With my on-stage collaborator Benedicte Le Lay we present a colourful, joyful and evocative mixture
of theatre, dance and visual art, with a large chunk of cheeky pop fun to entertain and intrigue the audience! The next shows in Paris are on 27th November and 11th December 2008 at Le Sentier Des Halles (the
shows start at precisely 20h00). Make sure to catch it, as these are the only shows we have planned for the time being.

Tout a commencé comme un album quasiment tout instrumental, conçu de mon désir de mélanger des éléments des trois instruments : le corps humain, le piano acoustique, et mon Yamaha PSS 270, un clavier pour enfants ayant apartenu à mon frère pendant notre enfance. En developpant des morceaux, j’ai commencé à écrire des mélodies dont j’ai interpreté quelques-unes moi-même et d’autres j’ai developpé et enregistré avec des invitées telles que Camille, Maya Barsony et China Moses. Actuellement, je négocie un contrat pour sortir un album qui devrait être disponible aux alentours de mars 2009.

Récemment, je me suis mis à interpréter un show très spécial tiré de ces chansons qui correspond à l’album. Avec mon collaborateur de scène, Benedicte Le Lay, nous présentons un beau mélange de théâtre, danse et d’art visuel, plein de couleur et de joie, avec une grosse partie de pop culotté pout divertir et intriguer le public ! Nos prochains concerts à Paris sont le 27 Novembre et le 11 Decembre 2008 à Sentier des Halles à 20h précises. Ne les ratez pas, comme ce sont les seuls concerts prévus pour le moment.

5. What about Paris makes it a great home base for your life and music compared to London?
Pourquoi as-tu choisi de te baser à Paris plutôt qu’a Londres pour ta vie et ton travail ?

I have never lived in London so I can’t compare. I come from Birmingham, which is not famed for being the centre of the music industry! I found it difficult to get things going in Birmingham, and in Paris I find I have a few more openings because of all the hard work with did on tour with Camille and promoting ‘Le Fil. I plan to
launch my album in France and in the UK (not necessarily at the same time!) so I’ll be able to compare more easily once I’ve experienced both sides of the channel. I must say however that the times we have performed in London with Camille were truly astounding. The audience is very enthusiastic for our work over there.

Je n’ai jamais vécu à Londres donc je ne peux pas les comparer. Je suis de Birmingham, une ville peu connue pour la musique !. J’ai trouvé qu’il etait difficile de démarrer la bas et à Paris , par contre, c’était plus facile avec un peu plus d’ouvertures grâce à tout mon travail en tournée avec Camille pour vanter Le Fil. Je me prépare à lancer mon album en France et au Royaume Uni (pas forcément en même temps !) donc, Je pourrais les comparer plus facilement une fois que j’aurais vécu des deux côtés de la manche. Je tiens à dire que les show avec Camille à Londres étaient vraiment abasourdissants. Le public était très enthousiaste pour notre projet là bas.

5: Djeuhdjoah

Djeuhdjoah, chansonnier “à vocation intérsidérale” vient de signer chez Source etc., la maison de disque de son pote et collaborateur Ours, l’uber-populaire, Yelle et l’artiste émergeant, Herman Dune. J’ai eu le plaisir de lui poser quelques questions et entendre ses réponses avec esprit sur sa musique et ses inspirations.

Djeuhdjoah, a self-described “interstellar singer songwriter”, just signed with Source etc., the label made famous by his friend and collaborator Ours, super popular Yelle and up and coming Herman Dune. I had the pleasureto ask him a few questions and get some very witty responses on his music and inspiration.

1. Comment définis-tu que “la chanson afropéenne à vocation intersidérale” ?
How do you define “Afropean Intergalactic Song” ?

“La chanson afropéenne à vocation intersidérale” est comme son nom l’indique, intercontinentale et particulièrement appelée à siéger entre les astres, au delà des désastres mais ceci, son nom ne l’indiquait pas. En fait, je suis né à Paris de parents camerounais, mélomanes et érudits, ai grandi au Sénégal entre 4 et 13 ans puis, suis venu en France à 13 ans et des poussières, en pension, à partir du Lycée…J’attendais ce nouveau départ avec une lueur dans le coeur et ai déchanté quand le mal du pays, de la famille s’est fait ressentir, la musique et la littérature étaient mon réconfort et j’inclus dans la littérature les longues lettres que m’écrivaient ma mère…Petit à petit je me suis adapté et ai développé cette faculté de facto…A cheval entre deux cultures, je reste en selle, galope, trotte ou reste au pas, à l’envie vers je ne sais où en chants dits ou en dires chantés, qu’en dire ?….chantier. Entre les astres ?!?

« Afropean Intergalactic Song » is as its name would suggest, intercontinental and particularly named to be situated among the stars (beyond certain calamities, but this is not indicated by its name). Actually, I was born in Paris to Cameroonian parents who were music loving and scholarly ; Grew up in Senegal between a ages 4 and 13, then came to France at bout age 13 for boarding school in high school. I awaited this fresh start with a gleam in my heart and was disillusioned by homesickness, and missing my family. Music and literature were my refuge. I also include my mother’s long letters to me as literature. Little by little, I readjusted myself and developed this skill myself. Riding between two cultures, I remain in the saddle, galopping, trotting, with the desire to go somewhere, not sure where, in spoken melodies or melodies sspoken, What about that ? A workshop? In the stars ?

2. Malgré certaines tendances, tu chantes en français plus qu’anglais. Pourquoi ?
Despite certain trends, you sing in French more than English. Why ?

Chanter en français ?…car c’est ma langue maternelle, ceci dit tu as raison de dire “plus” car je ne m’interdis pas de chanter en anglais voire en douala et plus car affinités malgré les fautes de syntaxe.
Chanter en charabia m’intéresse aussi, on est juste moins compris…Aimant comprendre, j’aimerais être compris d’où l’usage plus fréquent dans mes chansons d’une langue que je chéris, que j’aime tordre, dont je saisis les nuances, les danses…J’aime aussi mixer différentes langues dans une même ritournelle, ça ouvre des possibles. C’est drôle parce que Mathieu Boogaerts dont je suis la carrière discographique et qui est pour beaucoup sans le savoir, dans la démarche que j’entreprends en tant que chansonnier, a sorti il y a moins d’un mois l’album ” I love you ” où il chante dans un franglais des plus pleasing, that’s my thing.

Singing in French ? Because its my mother tongue. That said, you’re right to say « more » because I don’t forbid myself from English or Duala or other languages because of certain affinities despite the syntax errors. Singing in gibberish interests me too, you are just less understood. Appreciating comprehension, I like being understood from frequent use in my songs from a language I cherish, that I like twisiting, and which I can capture the nuances, the dances…I also like to mix different languages in the same song, it opens up possibilities. It’s funny because Mathieu Boogaerts, whose musical career I follow (and who like for many without knowing) has the same approach I am undertaking as an artist, came out with an album « I Love You » where he sings in a very nice franglais. That’s my thing.

3. Récemment, tu a été signé par Source etc. Publishing. Avec ce contrat sera-t-il un album solo Djeuhdjoah dans les bacs bientôt ? Si oui,pourrais tu nous parler de ce disque et de quoi nous devons nous attendre ?
Recently you were signed by Source etc. Publishing. With this contract, will there be a solo album in stores soon ? If yes, could you let us know what we can expect from the album ?

En principe, contractuellement, on devrait s’attendre à deux albums de Djeuhdjoah d’ici 2011. Time will tell…En fait, n’ayant jamais sorti d’album, je travaille sur ce premier disque depuis que je fais des chansons, ça prend forme…A venir. A quoi peut-on s’attendre ? A de l’inattendu forcément, c’est ce qui est cool pour une première sortie et me connaissant je risque, artistiquement, de garder ce “Je m’en foutisme” à l’égard de ce que l’on attend de moi, artistiquement. C’est drôle car la semaine dernière à l’ after show de Keziah Jones, un gars que je connais pour l’avoir croisé chez une amie qui m’est chère tentait de me mettre la pression sur ma première sortie discographique du style, je t’attends de pied ferme en précisant qu’il se foutait des machines qui roulent, en gros les artistes qui marchent, ce qui l’intéresse c’est de voir émerger de nouvelles têtes et comme elles émergent…Il m’a fait penser à un prédateur amateur de chair fraîche kleenex, j’ai ri.

Theoretically, there should be two Djeuhdjoah album between now and 2011. Time will tell. Actually, having never put out an album, I am working on this first one since I started writing songs and that’s starting to take shape…more to come. What to expect ? The unexpected, obviously ; That’s what is cool about a first release and knowing myself and what I can do ; I’ll probably keep a certain amount of an « I don’t give a damn » attitude regarding what is expected of me artistically. It’s funny that last week at Keziah Jones’after show, a guy that I know having crossed paths with at a dear friend’s house tried to put pressure on me for this first release. Like, I am expecting it « NOW !» specifying he could care less about the backstory, (basically only artists who succeed are all that interested him, and seeing new faces emerge and how they do it). He made me think of an amateur predator of fresh meat; I laughed

4. Après 18 mois de présidence de Nicolas Sarkozy, as-tu remarqué son effet sur l’industrie culturelle?
After 18 months of the Sarkozy administration, have you noticed his effect on the cultural industry?

Il ne me semble pas que Nicolas Sarkozy ait pondu quelque oeuvre artistique depuis son accession à la plus haute marche de l’état français, en ce qui concerne l’industrie culturelle, seule sa daisy s’en est chargé…Sinon, j’aime bien ( à voir de toute urgence sur Youtube) sa version de “La fièvre” de NTM au JT de Claire Chazal…parodie certifiée…J’aime bien ses pas de danses aussi, ce mouvement est pour le plus grand bonheur imitable à souhait, un président qui promeut le break dans la deuxième patrie du HiP HoP, c’est notable…Autre chose, il n’en est pas à l’origine mais mettons-le à son actif même s’il aimerait la voir disparaître des étals, la poupée vaudou à piquer à son effigie est une belle réussite. Plus sérieusement, son effet sur l’industrie culturelle m’importe peu mais je me renseigne…D’ailleurs sa volonté de “punir” les usagers d’internet qui téléchargent illégalement me semble une prise du problème par un bout louche, le but si je ne m’abuse est de rétribuer les auteurs, ça c’est louable et c’est peut être la cible qu’une politique culturelle devrait avoir….Encore une fois ce qui est mis en avant est la répression, au détriment de l’éducation et de la responsabilisation, ça me chagrine mais je garde la pêche.

It seems to me that Sarkozy has not laid out a creative work since his acension to the highest level of the French government. Regarding the cultural industry, only his wife handles that. Otherwise, I really like (a must-see You tube video) his version of « La Fièvre » of NTM on the evening news of Claire Chazal…a certifiable parody… I also like his dance steps ; this movement is actually imitable upon request for your pleasure. A president that promotes « the break » in the second largest nation of Hip Hop is notable ! Another thing, although he didn’t start it, let’s attribute it to him even if he would like to see it go , that voodoo doll made in his image. What a great success ! Seriously , though his effect on the cultural industry does not offer much for me, I am informing myself though… Moreover, his will to punish internet users who illegally download seems to approach the problem from the wrong end. The goal, if I am not mistaken, is to pay authors, is comendable, and perhaps the target that a cultural policy should have. Once again what is prioritized is repression to the detriment of education and accountability. It embarasses me, but I am still optimistic.

5. Avec quel interprète aimerais-tu chanter bientôt?
With which singer would you like to sing with soon ?

Avec ceux avec qui je chanterai ! Au gré des rencontres, du vent, de la route…mais pour la route j’en cite quelques uns dont certains avec qui je chante déjà mais je les cite parce que j’aimerai que cela se poursuive ou se reproduise….Kadja Nsé, ma mie…Lt Nicholson…Ours…Zahra Hindi…ça me plairait de chanter avec Melissa Laveaux dont l’album chez No Format est un régal, je suis aussi ouvert à l’interprétation de textes d’autres auteurs malgré le fait que je le sois aussi mais c’est si agréable de pouvoir s’asseoir dessus pour donner vie aux mots d’autres inversement je suis disposé à écrire pour d’autres artistes, c’est ouvert, tout vert, d’espoir…tous vers du mieux, juste un voeu en guise de ponctuation finale à cette interview à laquelle j’ai pris plaisir à répondre. Merci Alva. J’ai tenté au mieux.

By meeting people, the wind , the road, but for the road, I’ll cite some with whom I already sing but I mention them because I would like to pursue it or do it again…Kadja Nsé, my ladylove, Lt. Nicholson…Ours…Zahra Hindi…I would love to sing with Melissa Laveaux whose album with No Format is a real treat. I am also open to doing covers even though I am a songwriter. It’s nice to be able to sit down to give life to words by others inversally. I am inclined to write for other artists, it’s wide open, optomistic. Everything is getting better.
